Week 50: Apparently I'm Hispanic??

Image
Helloooo Get ready for a bunch of random stuff... We've started volunteering at the coalition center here where we help immigrants by giving them food, hygiene kits, covid tests, bus tickets, etc. We were just thrown into it and it was really stressful cause we had to switch between jobs really quick and we didn't know what we were doing but we figured it out pretty quick. People kept talking to me as if I knew Spanish and I would talk to them as much as I could but I still barely know any Spanish so I just kept saying "Lo siento, no hablo EspaƱol". People actually do that all the time here though haha. They think I'm hispanic and assume I know what they're saying hahaha.  We went to a small town named Brackettville about 45 minutes out of Del Rio and we found 5 new people to teach in less than 2 hours! One lady (Elizabeth) told us that when she saw us she knew she needed to talk to us because of an experience she had about 10 years ago. She said that missiona...

Week 49: Am I A Missionary Or A Therapist?

Image
In this episode of Elder Christensen's mission, we're going to be considering the question, "Am I a Missionary or a Therpist?"  Some people seem to have this special kind of trust with missionaries to where they are comfortable sharing every single thing that has happened in their life. And they will vent to us about all their struggles for extended periods of time. After which we will give them advice and things to work on. We had one of these experiences last week and it made me think about how we're kinda like therapists haha. Sometimes people just unload all their baggage on us and we can't even get a word in but I'm glad they can trust us! We did approximately 10,000 hours of service last week and it was awesome! Most of it was on Saturday and we barely even had time to eat. We also had 6 lessons scheduled and we had no cell service all day. It was insane.  Elder Jose Alonso, a general authority in our church, visited our mission and our branch! He sp...

Week 48: Where Elders Become Elders

Image
Wow this week flew by. Time just keeps speeding up! Here are a few highlights from this last week: • We started teaching a guy named Gabriel that was referred to us by the Spanish elders. He's agnostic and really wants to learn more about what we believe in. He's keeping commitments too!!  • We went to stop by another referral named Robert but his house number didn't exist so Elder Mecham thought he lived in the house closest to the address we had. We knocked on the door and a guy answered but we never asked what his name was. We taught him the full restoration and I was pretty positive it wasn't Robert but when Elder Mecham said the prayer he kept calling him Robert hahaha. We asked for his number so we went and got his card and sure enough, his name is Mario. Elder Mecham still didn't realize haha so I had to tell him after. Sooo we don't know where Robert is but we met Mario and he's cool! • On Friday we were street contacting and I had the thought to loo...

Week 47: Tornado Watch!!

Image
On Wednesday there was a fat storm that rolled in and all the streets flooded. It was so exciting. Frank (our truck) handled it like a boss. There was also a tornado watch. Not gonna lie, I wanted to see a tornado, but it didn't happen... which is probably a good thing I guess.      This week we also had an old Baptist lady sing to us and we didn't know what to do haha. She's the grandma of some kids in our branch that got baptized recently. She was telling us about how much she loves Jesus and then just burst into song. Her name is Gloria and her vibrato is on point.     On my exchange with Elder Miller (my district leader) we started talking to a guy named Steve on the street. He works with a member and has read some of the Book of Mormon but can't believe in it because he doesn't think he can know the truth of it through "feelings" or in other words, the Spirit. I asked him what he thought the purpose of the Spirit is and he said "to lead us and he...

Week 46: Frank The Frontier

Image
Buenas tardes desde Del Rio! It's already been a crazy few days here! Here's the rundown of my week: My last day in San Pedro we were biking and this guy yelled to us. I didn't feel good about stopping to talk so I kept going but Elder Neddo stopped. I circled back around and right from the get go I could tell this guy was on somethin. He started asking us really bizarre questions while smoking and standing about a foot away from our faces. He then asked if we could say a prayer so we asked what he would like us to pray about and he said, "San Antonio! Mexico! The world...". He told us to move off the sidewalk and then knelt on the grass. We walked over and knelt with him and then he started praying while cussing every 2 seconds. Then he asked us something (I can't remember what it was) and we slowly looked up cause we didn't realize he had ended the prayer. We ended up all just kneeling there as he would ask a weird question and then stare into our eyes f...
